320 x 240 Videos on YouTube and Viddler

August 31, 2007

OK, so you’ve got a bunch of videos rendered at 320 x 240 pixels. Are they going to look any better on Viddler? Here is the same 320 x 240 video on both services.

Video on Viddler

The quality is basically the same. However, the Viddler video is larger so it appears more pixelated. The embedded Viddler video is displayed at 437 x 370 pixels which is the default for their embed code. Moreover, videos on Viddler are displayed at 543 x 408 pixels.

Note that all of these ratios are 3:2. Capturing video at this ratio prevents video from being letterboxed, pillarboxed, or cropped. This leads to two best practices.

Best Practices
1) Capture and render your videos at 543 x 408 pixels or greater for videos on Viddler.

2) To maximize the screen pallet, capture video at a pixel ratio of 3:2.
